Cheap Day Out – Sam Adams Brewery

5 Aug

This is a very, very delayed “Cheap Day Out.”  In fact, it happened months before I had even thought about writing this blog.  But it was still (very) cheap. And a day out. So it counts!!

“Todays” destination: The Sam Adams Brewery in Jamaica Plain.

Why was this “always a good decision”? The brewery offers free tours followed by tastings at the following times:

Monday -  Thursday: 10am – 3pm
Fridays: 10am – 5:30pm
Saturdays: 10am – 3pm

Tours start approximately every 45 minutes and there is limited availability, so you have to get there early.  We arrived at about 9:30 for the first tour on a Saturday and there were already a large group of people waiting for free beer (I repeat…at 10AM….).  I’ve read that the tours fill up for the day by around noon.

Anyone can go for the short tour, but obviously the tasting is 21+.

The tour shows you around the small brewery, with a short history and explanation of beer and the Samuel Adams company.  The tour guide is enthusiastic and amusing (and knows that no one is there to listen to him talk).  During the tasting, you get to try three different types of Sam Adams and learn how to do a proper tasting.  We tried the Boston Lager, Summer Ale and Dunkelweizen.  You get to keep your tasting glass! Free stuff!

But Molly, you think beer is totally gross: I know. It is. But I’m an awesome girlfriend.  And it was free, PLUS we had coupons for free pint glasses so why not.

How to get there: Take the Orange Line to the Stony Brook stop.  The brewery is nearby at 30 Germania Street.

The whole thing takes about an hour and is overall a fun activity for 21+ folks, especially beer lovers.
